Windows 11 Upgrade: Frequently Asked Questions

How long will the upgrade to Windows 11 take, and when should I install it?

The time to upgrade varies depending on internet speed, but it typically takes up to an hour. While downloading, you can continue to use your computer and even schedule the installation for a convenient time.

Please ensure your device is connected to the internet and plugged into a charger during the installation. We’re rolling out the update gradually across SamTrans to ensure a smooth transition, so not everyone will receive it at the same time. When Windows 11 becomes available for your device, you’ll receive a notification in the Software Center. To help maintain security and system compatibility, please install the update as soon as it appears.

If you need assistance or have questions about scheduling, please reach out to IT at https://servicedesk.smctd.com. We’re here to help!

Why are we moving to Windows 11?

Windows 10 is reaching its end-of-life in 2025, meaning it will no longer receive critical security updates and support from Microsoft.

Upgrading to Windows 11 ensures that SamTrans remains secure, benefits from Microsoft’s latest features, and stays compatible with future technology.

What will happen to my files during the upgrade?

Your files and data will carry over with the upgrade to provide a seamless experience. However, we recommend backing up your files with OneDrive before installing the new Windows version, just to be safe.

If you need any guidance on setting up your backup, feel free to reach out.
